Is 8GB of VRAM actually a problem in 2026 or overblown?

Question

Been watching prices at the bottom of the market and pretty much everything I can actually afford right now ships with 8GB. Half the threads I read say that whole tier is done for, the other half say it's totally fine and people are overreacting... so which is it. I mostly play 1080p, might push some stuff to 1440p down the line if I ever upgrade the monitor. Where's the real line before 8GB actually starts hurting you?

It's a floor rather than a target. My 5060 chews through esports stuff and 1080p medium-high without complaint, that part is genuinely fine. Where it bites is modern AAA with ray tracing on, that can climb to 10-11GB, and path tracing pushes 13-14. For 1440p 12GB is the realistic minimum now, 16 if you want 4K

Went back and forth before buying my 5060 Ti. What sold me is Nvidia sells the exact same card at $379 for 8GB and $429 for 16GB, so clearly the memory matters and it helps even in plain rasterized games!

At 1080p comp settings VRAM is NEVER my problem. Frames come from the core
