Whether the 80 Plus tier on a PSU actually buys you anything real

Shopping to replace an aging unit and I keep landing on pairs of otherwise similar PSUs where the Platinum version costs a fair bit more than the Gold. For years I have quietly treated the 80 Plus tier as a general quality and safety grade, higher badge means better built unit. Comparing these side by side I am starting to think that assumption was never actually true. What does the badge actually test, and does climbing the tiers buy you anything real, or is it just a label I have been overpaying for?

This is the classic mix-up. 80 Plus only certifies efficiency, 80% at three load points on an idealized bench. It says nothing about overcurrent protection, ripple, or cap grade. Cybenetics rates the whole load range plus noise, which is why corsair is dropping it. Between gold and platinum the gap is tiny, so judge the platform underneath rather than the label.

badges are marketing surface, nothing more. i only buy a unit after i have read a proper teardown review of that exact model. the label on the box never factors into the decision.
